Samhain Ritual
© Shauna McShane, October 2010
Based on ADF Druidry

PREPARATION
The Well Keeper fills the Well with water.  The Fire Maiden lights the fire in the cauldron.  The Tender of the Tree dresses the tree.

STARTING RITUAL
The bell is rung three times to announce the beginning of ritual.

OPENING PRAYERS
Bard:
We are here to honor the Gods on this night of Samhain, and darkened Moon.

Everyone:
So be it!

Gatekeeper:
We come to honour our ancestors, the spirits of Nature, and the Gods and Goddesses of our own beliefs, and of this place.

Everyone:
So be it!

Seer:
Through the magic of the holy well, the sacred fire, and the great tree, we offer our rites.

Everyone:
So be it!

ENTRANCE TO THE GROVE
The Bard begins a shamanic drumbeat (or other instrument), and leads the group in singing "Come we now as a People":

Everyone:
Come we now as a people, to gather at the Sacred Well
Come we now as a people, to gather in the warmth and the light of the Flame.

(Repeat 3 times)

Gatekeeper:
Goes around and anoints everyone's forehead with the Awen symbol as they sing.

PURIFICATION
Bard, Seer and Gatekeeper pick up salt, cup of water, and censer.  They go around the Grove purifying each member.

Bard:
(picks up salt, and places a bit on each person's tongue, while saying:)
Taste the salt of the Earth, and be purified.

Seer:
(picks up cup, and fills with well water, and offers each person a sip)
Taste the water of the Well, and be purified.

Gatekeeper:
(picks up the censer and stands before each person, while saying:)
Inhale the smoke of the Fire, and be purified.

HONOURING THE EARTH MOTHER
Bard:
Let us now honour the Earth who is our Mother, our home, and the substance of our bodies.
(puts offering of grain into the offering dish)

Beloved Mother, from whose womb sprung All.  She who bears all life, and Whose body holds those who have passed from this life, we ask that You bless this rite, and join us here on hallowed ground.  So Be It.

Everyone:
So be it.

GROUP GROUNDING/MEDITATION

The Seer:

Breathe in slowly (1, 2, 3), breathe out slowly (1, 2, 3).  Breathe in slowly (1, 2, 3), Breathe out slowly (1, 2, 3).  Breathe in slowly (1, 2, 3), breathe out slowly (1, 2, 3).

Continue your slow breathing, and focus your mind's eye on your belly.  This is the Cauldron of incubation.  There is a tiny seed in there, waiting to grow.  Concentrate on that seed, and watch as it shivers and shakes in your belly, trying to burst forth into life.  Now realize, this seed is you, send all of yourself into that seed.

When you are ready, grow roots out of your belly, down through your legs, out of the bottom of your feet.  Feel these roots seeking earth, seeking soil.  Let your consciousness become these roots, feel them find that soil and bury deep within it.    Reside there for a couple breaths.

Now return your consciousness to the seed.   Feel the branches that have grown up through your abdomin, your shoulders and arms, your neck and your head.  Feel them reaching higher and higher.  Let your consciousness become those branches.  Feel the heaviness of the wood, the bark that surrounds and protects it.  Focus on that for a few breaths.

Now move out, feeling the leaves and sprouts at the ends of these branches.  Feel the sun warming them, feel the oxygen they are giving off.  Just breathe.  In, and out.  In, and out.  In, and out.  Be those leaves, feel the sun on your face, feel the breeze brush you gently.

When you are ready, travel back down those branches, back into your belly.  The tiny seedling that was there is now a strong, thick trunk, covered in protective bark.

Now feel the flow of your entire tree-self.  From the roots dug deep into the soil, to the leaves turned towards the sun.

Dwell in this being of wholeness for a few breaths. Breathe in, then out.  In, and out.  In and out.

When you are ready, envision your human self.  The branches become your arms, your head, your shoulders.  The roots become your legs, your feet, your toes.  The trunk of the tree is now your belly, the Cauldron of incubation, waiting for the next time you must grow your seed.

Returning your consciousness back to its natural place, back to being human.  Breathe in, and out, in and out, in and out.  When you are ready, open your eyes.

UNITY SONG
The Bard leads the Unity Song:

Everyone:
We are one with the Mother,
We are one with the earth,
We are one with each other,
By our lives, by our birth.

(repeat three times)

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND PRECEDENT
Bard:
We gather here at the end and beginning of the year, on the Feast of Samhain.  This is the last harvest, the Wheel turns to when the dark time begins.  The world sinks into winter's sleep.

Seer:
As those before us did, and as we do now, and and so may those who come after us will, we honour the Dead.  We offer worship to the Queen of Phantoms, and the Lord of the Dead.  We honour the nature spirits of the world about us.  And we give offering to the Blessed Dead.

Gatekeeper:
We offer to Donn the Dark One, the Antlered God who offers hospitality and peace to those bound for the Ancestors’ Country.  We offer to Morrigan, the Great Queen of Battle and Sorcery; the Old Woman of Death and the Cauldron of Rebirth.

Bard:
On this day where the veils thin, and the dead may join us, we honour the Blessed Dead as the ancients did.

HONOURING WELL, FIRE AND TREE

Well Keeper:
(places silver in the well)
Sacred waters surround us, flowing beneath all being, accept our offering.  Bring the wisdom of the depths of the well to us, flow within us.

Everyone:
Sacred well, flow within us.

Fire Maiden:
(pours a bit of scented oil into fire)
Sacred fire that consumes and transforms.  Burning deep within the Earth, wisdom and light coming from your heat, burn within us.

Everyone:
Sacred fire, burn within us.

Tree Tender:
(cense with smoke, sprinkle with water)
Sacred tree, standing in both this world and the next.  Grow to the center of the sky, grow to the center of the oceans, grow to the center of Earth.   Grow within us.

Everyone:
Sacred tree, grow within us!

AWEN
Bard:
Power of Awen we invoke you,
Bring us inspiration,
The voice of the Well, inspiration gushing like its waters.
The voice of the Fire, inspiration burning like its flames.
I call to you during this rite.
So be it.

Everyone:
So be it.

Everyone:
Awen chant, three times.

ACKNOWLEDGING AND OFFERING TO OUTSIDERS
Gatekeeper:
(offering is made to the South of the Hallowed Grove)
Dark ones, ancient ones,
You Who dwell without the light,
Shades all, twisted and unknown,
We offer You this ale and cake,
And ask a gift for a gift.
Do not trouble our workings this night.
So be it.

Everyone:
So Be it.

OPENING THE GATEWAYS
Gatekeeper:
Mannanon Mac Lir, we call upon you on this night of thinning veils,
Surround us with Your mists,
As we stand on this shore, awaiting entrance to the depths,
The seas of the Underworld, the Worlds of the Blessed Dead,
The Worlds of magic and mystery.
We make this offering to you
(put salt into the well, and a shell)
To ask that you open the Gateways,
And protect us in our walk through the lands of the Dead,
And the worlds of magic and mystery.
So be it!

Everyone:
So be it!

Everyone sings:
Gatekeeper open the portals,
Between the Gods and mortals,
Power freely flows,
As our magic grows.

(Sing 3 times)

HONOURING THE GODS
Bard:
Darkness cloaks the Earth, and the Morrigan comes to visit.
Lady of death, of rebirth and change.
Slippery eel woman, red bull charging, howling wolf, and cawing raven.
We honour You and ask for Your blessing in our working.
We give You a precious stone...

(placed in offering dish)
So that the bones of the earth may be clothed again in life.
Whiskey...

(poured in fire)
So that the blood may flow within us, and spirit dwell in flesh.
Feather...

(placed before tree)
So that You may watch over us with Your raven eye.
Be welcome among us, Morrigan, and accept our sacrifice.

Everyone:
Accept our sacrifice!

Seer:
Darkness cloaks the Earth, and Donn comes to visit.
Lord of death, of resting souls.
Horned god, Dark One, known as Herne and Cernunnos, leader of the Hunt.
We honour You and ask for Your blessing in our working.
We give You silver...

(put silver in offering bowl)
That You grant us potential, the wealth of the Underworld.
Oil...

(poured in fire)
That our lives are renewed as the richness of the lands are.
Horn...

(placed before the tree)
That those who know You may bless us during the next Hunt.
Be welcome among us, Donn, and accept our sacrifice.

Everyone:
Accept our sacrifice!

Hallow these waters!

(All hold the cup together)

Bard:
We draw blessing from the Well,
We hold the ale of inspiration.

Seer:
Behold the holy cup of magic.
We drink in wisdom, love and strength.

(Each takes a sip, then passes it clockwise around the Grove, while everyone sings)

Everyone:
Pour the waters, raise the cup.
Drink your share of wisdom deep.
Strength and joy now fill us up.
As the elder ways we keep.

(sing 3 times, or until everyone has drank)

ENERGY RAISING AND WORKING

Bard:
Speaks to everyone about energy raising, and what he has decided the energy should go to.  Then the group joins hands, and begins raising energy:

Younger than before
Younger than before

GROUNDING

Seer:
Stand with your feet planted slightly apart.  Close your eyes and relax.

Breathe in slowly (1, 2, 3), breathe out slowly (1, 2, 3).  Breathe in slowly (1, 2, 3), Breathe out slowly (1, 2, 3).  Breathe in slowly (1, 2, 3), breathe out slowly (1, 2, 3).

Continue your slow breathing, and focus your mind's eye on your body.  Feel the tips of your fingers, the tips of your toes, the top of your head...feel the tingle of remaining energies.  Draw it up, up your arms, down through your head to your neck, up through your legs.

Feel the energy curling in on itself, tight inside your belly.  Now feel it resting there, and concentrate on it.  Breathe in slowly (1, 2, 3), breathe out slowly (1, 2, 3).  Breathe in slowly (1, 2, 3), Breathe out slowly (1, 2, 3).  Breathe in slowly (1, 2, 3), breathe out slowly (1, 2, 3).

Now send that ball of energy downwards, into your pelvis, branching into two and into your thighs.  Feel it course through your knees, into your calves, and down into your feet.  Concentrate on it in your feet, feeling it tingle.

Breathe in slowly (1, 2, 3), breathe out slowly (1, 2, 3).  Breathe in slowly (1, 2, 3), Breathe out slowly (1, 2, 3).  Breathe in slowly (1, 2, 3), breathe out slowly (1, 2, 3).

Now release the energy into the ground, feeling it draining out slowly, deliberately, into the ground.  Feel the ground suck it up hungrily, making use of the excess energy you were holding.  Now relax and breathe.

Breathe in slowly (1, 2, 3), breathe out slowly (1, 2, 3).  Breathe in slowly (1, 2, 3), Breathe out slowly (1, 2, 3).  Breathe in slowly (1, 2, 3), breathe out slowly (1, 2, 3).  When you are ready, start moving again.

BLESSING AND CLOSING
Bard:
The Ale of Blessing flows in us, filling us with the magic of Morrigan and Donn.  As the year turns, let us welcome the quiet of the Dark.  Let the Stillness of the land calm and satisfy our spirits, allowing us to receive the Harvest’s Bounty.  Let the gain of the passing year be ours, to fill our lives with contentment.  Let us welcome the Dead who wish to return to the living world, even as we remember those who depart.  May we rest content as we pass the threshold of new beginnings.*

CLOSING THE GATES
Gatekeeper:
Mannanon Mac Lir, we thank you on this night of thinning veils,
Surrounded by Your mists,
We swim up slowly, from the seas of the Underworld,
Coming back to the shores of the depths.
We thank You for opening the Gateways.
(put salt into the well, and a piece of silver)
And protecting us in our walk through the lands of the Dead,
And the worlds of magic and mystery.
The Gates are closed.

Everyone:
The Gates are closed!

Gatekeeper:
Now let the fire be flame
Let the well be water;
Let all be mundane, as it was before.
So be it!

Everyone:
So be it!

ENDING THE RITUAL
Bard:
(leads everyone in final chant)

Everyone:
Walk with wisdom from this hallowed place.
Walk not in sorrow, our roots shall ere embrace.
May strength be your brother, and honor be your friend,
And luck be your lover until we meet again.

(sing 3 times)

Bard:
Walk with wisdom, love and strength.  The rite is ended.

(rings bell three times)

Beltaine Ritual
© Shauna McShane, May 2008
Based on ADF Druidry

Altar is set up with wine and cakes, symbols of the elements, and the Well, Fire and Tree. The Chalice and Athame are added. The May Pole is set up nearby.

Purifying the Space

In the Center of the Circle, sprinkle salt nine times on the ground while saying:
"With Earth we bless for our rebirth!"

Take up the Water dish and sprinkle nine times around the Circle, while saying:
"With Water we bless our sons and daughters!"

Light the incense, and hold it above your head, walking around the Circle while saying:
"With Air we dance without a care!"

Take the candle around the Circle, while saying:
"With Fire we kindle our desire!"

Consecration

Pour water from the jug into the well while saying:

"Flora, Lady of the Flowers, we pour this water to Your Well, May the tides of rivers and lakes now swell. Bring us the cleansing of the flowers of the earth, Through water that brings about our rebirth. So be it!"

Pass the well around so each person can wash their hands in it to symbolize self purification.

Light the fire in the cauldron while saying:
"Pan of the fields and fauna, hooved God of Passion, We light this fire in sacred fashion, Purify us through flames of lust, Through Balefires, fertility You entrust! So be it!"

Each person may walk up to the flame and toss a handful of purifying incense into it.

Offering to Outdwellers

Ale is poured into the Outdweller's bowl, and a piece of cake is placed in, as the Warrior says:
"Spirits of the day and night, Spirits who may disturb this rite, May the Fae of Beltaine quell your might, So we may perform our ritual tonight."

All:
"So be it."

Offerings to Well, Fire and Tree

Silver is offered to the Well while saying:
"Sacred waters of the well, Fountain upwards, our souls fill. Sacred waters of the deep, Let your powers flow beneath our feet."

Everyone says:
"Sacred waters fill our souls."

Oil is offered to the flames while saying:
"Sacred fire of all creation, Power of our transformation. Bringer of purity and of light, Sacred fire burn within us this night."

Everyone says:
"Sacred fires burn within us."

The Tree is censed and sprinkled with Well water while saying:
"Sacred Tree, of chaos and order, Bring these two worlds together. Creator of magic, growing tall, Sacred Tree, grow within us all."

Everyone says:
"Sacred Tree, grow within us."

Statement of Ritual Intent

"The celebration of Beltaine includes many symbolic and ritual acts. This is a time of joining. Trial marriages were performed on this day, couples would go a-maying to bring fertility to crops, cattle were driven through Balefires to ensure their fertility. Flowers were collected for decorating, and wreaths were worn by maidens and men alike. The Maypole, a phallic symbol, would be danced around with ribbons, symbolizing the enveloping of the male within the female. Today we honour Flora, the Roman Goddess of flowers, fertility and beauty. We also honour Pan, the goat-footed God, who represents lust, passion, fertility and wildness."

Opening the Gates

Oil and Incense are added to the cauldron:

"Mannanan Mac Lir, Keeper of the Gate, We ask You in reverence, to keep our passage safe. Part the mists of the Worlds Beyond here, Keep us safe, and keep us near. So be it."

All: "So be it."

Offerings to Ancestors and Kindreds

A bit of food or drink is added to the fire:
"Ancestors of old, ancestors of all, We ask You now to hear our call. Kindreds and Fae, Otherkin and Sidhe, With us we ask You to be. Gods and Dead, and Mighty Sidhe, Powers of Earth, Air and Sea. We honour You with reverence and peace, By Fire and Well and Sacred Tree."

Offerings to The Deities

Offering of wine is held up towards the sky while saying:
"Beltaine is a time of fertility! A time of joining, sexuality and balance. We make this offering to Pan!"

Hymn to Pan:
"Lord of Earth, of Forest and Field, Of all the fruit and flowers we yield, Goat-footed God of Arcady lore, We feel Your Might to our very core. Lust of the Satyr, the horns of Your head, We see You take the nymphs unto Your bed. Pan of the Forest, and Pan of the Field, Lord of the Vine, before You we kneel! The Maypole awaits Your glorious dance, And might You bring us blessings, perchance! Springtime is here, and fertility is nigh, As couple a-maying, in fields they do lie. By seed and root, by bud and stem, We call You now, again and again! Be with us Pan, on Beltaine night, Bring with you Lustiness, and full delights! Hail to Pan!"

Everyone: "Hail to Pan!"

Offering of flowers are held up towards the sky while saying:
"Beltaine is a time of fertility! A time of joining, sexuality and balance. We make this offering to Flora!"

Hymn to Flora:
"Oh Maiden, Flora, Lady of Delight, We call to You on Beltaine night! Lady of flowers, of fruit and of field, Of all the harvests and crops that we yield. We feel Your blessings, your strength as our core, As You open Springtime's heavy door. Lady of herbs, of freshness and flower, We dance around Your sacred bower. Lady of lustiness, of diminuitive gaze, We bring you songs, to You we praise! Flora, Fauna, Goddess of Delight, We ask of You the second sight! Bring us flowers, bring us grain, Fertility brought forth, phallic rain! By leaf and twig, and root and bow, Join us in our dance, here and now! Hail to Flora!"

Everyone: "Hail to Flora!"

Great Rite

Man and woman stand before the altar. Woman is holding the chalice, while the man plunges the athame into it. They then say:

Man:
"The Sword, the Blade, the Athame and spear, I fill you now, and hold you near. God to Goddess, and Man to Woman, Heart to heart, and hand to hand."

Woman:
"The Grail, the Cup, the Chalice and womb, For you to fill, I chant this Rune. Goddess to God, and Woman to Man, Heart to heart, and hand to hand."

Man:
"Goddess, Maiden, Woman Divine, I invoke my right to call you mine. Priestess, Nymph, Lady of May, Accept my love on this Day, As I now unite with thee, As I so will, so mote it be."

Woman:
"Horned Lord, Sage, Man Divine, I invoke my right to call you mine. Priest, Satyr, Lord of May, Accept my love on this Day. As I now unite with thee, As I so will, so mote it be."

The athame is removed from the chalice, and the man tilts the chalice so the woman man take a sip, then hands the chalice to her and she tilts it for him. They kiss on the lips, then pass the chalice to everyone else to drink.

May Pole ritual

Everyone takes a turn anointing the pole with oil, proclaiming what they wish to be blessed with. (Example: "I ask for good health!") Each person then takes up a ribbon, and the dance is started, over and under, as music is played or drumming is done.

Thanks and Closing

"We have been blessed by Flora and Pan. We have given our offerings, and received blessings. We have honoured the Sidhe, the Ancestors and the Gods. But it is time to return to the mundane world, with joy in our hearts, and knowledge of the mysteries of Beltane. May we carry the knowledge and blessings given in this sacred Grove into our every day lives. O Flora and Pan!"

All: "We thank you!"

"Sidhe and Ancestors"

All: "We thank you!"

"Ancestors and Kindred"

All: "We thank you!"

Closing the Gates

"Mannanan Mac Lir, Gatekeeper, Guide and God. We thank You for guiding our way."

All: "We thank you!"
"May the gates be closed, May the fire be flame, May the well be simple water, May this space be mundane. Let the gates be closed."

All: "Let the gates be closed. So be it."
